Live and Let Live is a global movement for all who seek to live in harmony with our fellow humans, in a peace on earth, by adhering to 2 essential principles of freedom and goodness.
- 3L anchors the law in a truth we hold to be self-evident: that each of us is free. When our freedom is denied via coercion, theft, fraud, pollution, and threats of harm, our universal human right to live free from aggression is violated. This is the basis of 3L’s ****mandatory Legal Principle, ‘don’t aggress’, which builds on libertarian Non-Aggression Principle but allows unavoidable grey areas to be resolved by local communities. 3L diagnoses society’s biggest challenges, existential threats and injustices as all stemming from the mistake of legally permitting aggression. As these risks compound, we urgently need to realign all laws to protect individual freedom. Freedom is the essential foundation that makes peace possible… while there are cracks in that foundation, the peaceful society built on top is vulnerable to collapse.
- Freedom alone does not ensure peace. To build a peaceful society, voluntary virtues and cultural goodness are required to make it a wonderful place to live. These virtues must be voluntary, otherwise aggression is required to enforce morality, which undermines the foundations of freedom. 3L deliberately separates the law from morality to avoid our current state of an endless struggle to force moral preferences on other people against their will. Over time, this cycle of ‘law-fare’ has proliferated the number of laws to a point where almost all people in society can be deemed a criminal, which serves no-one. Victimless crimes like gambling, prostitution, sexual preferences, trade, drug use and speaking ones mind might be deemed immoral by some, but they do not harm us. We can persuade and lead by example, but those who arrest people with different moral preferences to their own are the aggressors. Two wrongs do not make a right. 3L is the world’s only real peace movement because peace requires these two principles. We urgently need to live and let live. There is nothing stopping us. 3L is simply a re-framing of the ancient and cross-cultural Golden Rule that all reasonable people already agree with.
